In an earlier blog post we spoke about things we can do to keep us running over 40. Today, we invite you to join us as we lace up our running shoes and explore the significant differences between running over 40 and how we did it way back in our halcyon days! Co-founder of RunningWise, Mike shares his thoughts on the subject.
As a runner over 40, I’d say I approach things with a greater appreciation of how integral running is to my overall wellbeing. As I get older I value this more. With experience, I’ve realised and accepted some core principles for running (and life), like building from a solid base, gradual progression to achieve big goals and listening to your body, having the confidence to adjust your approach accordingly.
In my younger running years, I’d say impatience led the way. Everything was fast, focusing on the result and not the process for getting there. Of course, there are some things I wish I had now, like greater flexibility and shorter recovery times but overall I’d rather be where I am now.
Whether you are a seasoned runner or not, no matter your age, when you decide to be a runner you can be. It’s both a mindset and a disciplined practice – the recipe is straightforward. Here are some comparisons we have made between running in our 20s and running over 40.
Running in Your 20s: The Boundless Energy Years
In our 20s, running felt like a limitless adventure. The energy levels were high, recovery seemed almost instant, and the world was our running playground. Here are some distinctive features of running during these vibrant decades:
Faster Recovery:
- In our 20s, muscles tended to recover more quickly, allowing for faster bounce-back after intense runs or workouts.
- Injuries, if they occurred, often healed faster, contributing to a sense of invincibility.
Exploration and Variety:
- The younger years were characterised by a sense of curiosity and a desire for exploration. We sought new routes, varied terrains, and different types of races.
Training Intensity:
- Training intensity could be higher as our bodies could endure more stress, facilitating faster improvements in speed and endurance.
- We engaged in interval training, speed workouts, and consistent high-mileage without feeling as prone to burnout.
Competitive Edge:
- Many runners in their 20s embrace a competitive spirit, participating in races and striving for personal records.
- The focus was often on pushing boundaries and achieving athletic milestones.
Running Over 40: Embracing Wisdom and Adjustments
As the odometer clicks into the 40s, the running landscape undergoes subtle transformations. While our passion for running remains unwavering, adjustments become key to a sustainable and enjoyable running experience.
Prioritising Recovery:
- Recovery becomes paramount when you are running over 40. Muscles may take a bit longer to bounce back, necessitating a more deliberate approach to rest and recuperation.
- Incorporating activities like yoga, stretching, and adequate sleep becomes crucial for overall well-being.
Mindful Training:
- When running over 40, we should adopt a more mindful approach to training, focusing on the quality rather than quantity of miles.
- Incorporating cross-training, strength training, and flexibility exercises becomes essential to maintain overall fitness and prevent injuries.
Listening to the Body:
- One of the notable shifts is the increased attention to signals from the body. We become adept at recognizing signs of fatigue, potential injuries, and the importance of adjusting training plans accordingly.
Setting Realistic Goals:
- While the competitive spirit persists, we may shift our focus from constant personal records to setting realistic and achievable goals.
- Embracing the joy of running, participating in events for the experience rather than the competition, becomes a fulfilling approach.
Building a Supportive Community:
- With years of running experience, we appreciate the importance of a supportive running community, a principle at the core of RunningWise.
- Engaging with fellow runners, sharing experiences, and providing encouragement become integral components of the running journey.
Common Threads: The Joy of Running
Despite the differences, certain joys of running remain constant across the decades:
Stress Relief:
- Running continues to be a powerful stress reliever, offering a mental escape and an opportunity to clear our minds.
- Whether in our 20s or 40s, the cathartic benefits of running contribute significantly to overall well-being.
Sense of Achievement:
- The sense of accomplishment derived from completing a run, whether a challenging trail in the mountains or a serene neighborhood loop, remains a universal joy.
- Every step, regardless of age, is a testament to personal strength and perseverance.
Connection with Nature:
- The joy of connecting with nature, whether under the golden hues of a sunrise or amidst the tranquility of a wooded trail, is a timeless aspect of running enjoyed by all.
- Runners of all ages find solace and inspiration in the beauty of the outdoors.
